Sleep logs turn vague nights into usable data. Without them, insomnia treatment is mostly guessing.

What a sleep log gives you

A daily log captures lights-out time, wake time, estimated sleep onset, awakenings, total sleep time, and naps. Those numbers let us calculate sleep efficiency and set a safe, targeted sleep window.

Why this matters clinically

Many people with insomnia overestimate wake time and underestimate total sleep. The distress is real, but the estimate is often off. Logs help us separate felt wakefulness from likely sleep and adjust treatment based on patterns, not panic.

How to log well

  • Fill it out each morning. Recall is better right after waking.
  • Use estimates, not perfection. Rough accuracy is enough for trend decisions.
  • Avoid clock-watching at night. It increases arousal and worsens estimates.
  • Keep at least 1 to 2 weeks. A longer baseline gives cleaner pattern detection.

Common trap

"I can remember my sleep without writing it down." Usually not reliably. Memory for awakenings is biased, especially during stressful weeks.

Bottom line

No log, no map. If you are doing CBT-I or sleep compression, logs are the foundation for safe adjustments and measurable progress.

Next: Creating your sleep plan—the written commitment that turns the data into action.
